2025 CSA Frequently Asked Questions

WHY JOIN THE CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. CSA memberships help provide the farm with much-needed income during the lean months of winter and early spring, when we're beginning to order seeds, source high-quality organic potting soil, and hire our team for the coming season. Members purchase their CSA shares during the off-season, and in exchange, they receive a weekly delivery of vegetables all season long, and have the option to add weekly or biweekly egg dozens, flowers, and mushrooms to their shares. Flower and mushroom options are currently pending.

Beyond a season full of delicious and beautiful produce, members also receive a weekly newsletter that includes info about each week's delivery, tons of tasty recipe recommendations, and exclusive information about the goings on at Liberty Farms. Through the newsletter, an annual member survey, and (in non-pandemic years) regular visits from the farmers at CSA pick-up sites, members have the opportunity to develop a relationship with the people growing their food. When you know where your food comes from - and who's growing it - it's even yummier.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

We will continue to offer a market-style CSA at many of our locations in 2025. That means each week for 20 weeks we bring a selection of vegetables to our different pick-up locations. (See below for a list of those locations.) Our members are then able to "shop" for what they'd like to take home each week based on the size of their share. (See below for info on share sizes.) This means there's a lot more freedom and customization in our market-style CSA compared to a standard CSA. Our apartment CSA deliveries will continue to be prepackaged.

WHAT SHARE SIZES DO YOU OFFER?

We offer three CSA share sizes:

  • Full Size (10 items)
  • Medium Size (7 items)
  • Small Size (5 items)

In terms of what you take home each week, that changes as the season progresses! For example, in July, someone with a medium share might take home:

  1. A quart of cherry tomatoes
  2. Four large heirloom tomatoes
  3. A large speckled eggplant
  4. Four small cucumbers
  5. A bag of mixed lettuce
  6. Two zucchinis
  7. A pint of multicolor string beans

But a few months later their haul might look closer to this:

  1. A quart of blue potatoes
  2. A bunch of rainbow carrots
  3. A quart of red onions
  4. A few heads of garlic
  5. Two honeynut squashes
  6. A head of cone cabbage
  7. A bunch of dinosaur kale

And the best part? Because it involves bringing down a little extra of everything to ensure that all members can bring home what they want, we're also able to donate our surplus to nearby food pantries and/or seniors centers each week.

For more info on what we're growing and when this season, check out our garden page.

HOW MUCH DOES A SHARE COST?

Share prices differ slightly from pick-up site to pick-up site due to length of travel and administrative fees. To see the prices for your pick-up site, select your neighborhood below under "featured products," or visit our online store.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

We'd love to have you as a CSA member! 2025 SIGN-UPS ARE OPENING SOON! You may sign up by selecting your neighborhood below under 'featured products,' or by visiting our online store.

We incur a hefty fee for all credit card transactions and don't want to transfer that fee onto you, our members. So, PLEASE CONSIDER PAYING BY CHECK. HOW LONG DOES IT LAST AND WHEN WILL IT START?

Our CSA lasts for 20 glorious weeks, but the exact start date is up to mother nature. Egg shares last the same 20 weeks as the veggies.

With a shorter growing season, flower shares last for 10 weeks, during the absolute height of the season. This is usually from around mid-July to mid-September.

Folks who have signed up as CSA members are automatically subscribed to our CSA newsletter, where we keep members abreast of exact start dates and other important updates.

HOW DO I INCLUDE EGGS, FLOWERS, AND/OR MUSHROOMS IN MY DELIVERY?

When you sign up for a CSA membership, you have the option to also add a weekly (every week) or biweekly (every other week) egg, flower, and/or mushroom share. Please keep in mind that only CSA vegetable share members can sign up for egg and mushroom shares, although flower shares can be purchased independently.

Already have a veg share but need to add eggs, flowers, and/or mushrooms? Send Emily an email at sales@libertyfarmsny.com and she can send you an invoice!

DO YOU OFFER PRORATING OPTIONS FOR YOUR CSA?

Yes, absolutely! We are very happy to prorate the  cost of your CSA share:

  • If you  have decided to sign up for the CSA after we have started our deliveries. No problem - we'll simply prorate the cost of your share according to how many weeks we have left, no matter where we are in the season.
  • Please send Emily an email at sales@libertyfarmsny.com and she will send you an invoice for the correct number of weeks.

I WILL BE OUT OF TOWN FOR SOME OF THE CSA. WHAT DO I DO?

We are unfortunately unable to offer refunds in the event of your having to leave town unexpectedly during the course of the CSA. If that happens, consider a couple of alternative options:

  • Have a friend or neighbor pick up your share during the week(s) you are out of town!

  • Consider donating your share. Our sites are partnered with food pantries and senior care centers to whom we donate extra produce at the end of each pick-up day. If you don't re-designate your share to a friend or neighbor while you are gone, we will donate your share to one of our partner sites.
